Aspects of Asperger's Syndrome: "Pedantic speech"

"Pedantic" speech is frequent amongst people with Asperger Syndrome, that is marked by the avoidance of slang words (and other abbreviated speech used in daily life). The language is impeccable, but wordy, to the point of appearing "pedantic". This speech is marked by the use of "technical", or "scientific" words, or even a "high-brow vocabulary" obtained from reading an old encyclopedia (example: kinematography, instead of cinematography, I used this word, after reading an encyclopedia from 1910).

In the days, of cyber this and cyber that, I would fit in quit well with my figures of speech, if I was 18 today. However, back in 1977, when few people even knew what a modem was. I compared the world to a computer, and often used words like access, login (In my diary excerps, you will see an example of that. I compared the beginning of the semester to a login session, where my student number 7730382, was like a user ID. Note the squares under the password "prompt". Back in the days, most people used printing terminals, passwords were blacked out by a mask (that is, series of letters, overstriked, to hide the password).

Between 1977 and much thoughout the 80's, I would apply computer terms to describe dayly life. I would say "syntax error", each time I did a social faux pas, or "system error!" if it was bad enough to foul up an evening and result in rejection. If I wasn't allowed to do something I liked, I used "Protection Violaton". I had access to the Library, I would log out from school, and login to my house. (when I finished school and returned home). I used a more advanced operating system in school, than at home (that is I felt freer in school, and had less restrictions on my behavior than at home, where my every gesture seemed to be tracked by my mom.).

Some characters are unreadable, however, this is an excerpt from a diary I kept, on a calender (in this example, starting Monday, Sept 12, 1977). 6732, is the number of days I was alive on that date, I recorded the weather, temperature, and events. Antoine, is my autistic brother, who on the 13, was struck by a car, crossing the street. He came out with a broken tooth, and otherwise was OK. Caroline is my youngest sister, who was starting high school (Caroline accessed in Montreal High School). M0TI - A code for an incident affecting my autistic brother a word I stimmed on along with "motivation" and other words with "moti" in it. X2FAC, was a fictious file, containing all the people I interacted with in school (FAC for factors, and faculty). BIORHY is my biorhythm plot, according to a biorhythm calculator I had back then, I convinced my mom, (who believed in biorhythms to buy it a year earlyer, because, it was able to compute the number of days between dates). TUESDAY on the top, is simply a codification, where the whole semester is scaled against a "week", which will become "friday" on the last day of the semester. One of my wierd ways of measuring time.

Example of "logging in to the semester". It was inspired from the McGill Music time sharing system.
